About Mercatus Smile Project
MERCATUS SMILE Project, a new initiative, to reach out to the elderly from low-income families on 22 July 2015 at AMK Hub. Grassroots Adviser Mr Seng Han Thong, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC is invited as special guest to grace this event.
Launch of Mercatus Smile Project
About 80 low income elderly residents from Ang Mo Kio GRC, under the care of Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society, will be invited to the event, and will be treated to a wholesome breakfast at NTUC FoodFare as well as receive free health screenings, haircuts, and back massages at AMK Hub. They will also receive goodie bags containing a first-aid kit, thermometer, health ointment and AMK Hub vouchers. (Details in Annex).
Mr Andy Kau, General Manager of Mercatus Co-operative Ltd, which owns AMK Hub, said, “AMK Hub has been receiving strong support of the community in Ang Mo Kio for the past eight years and we hope to give back to the same community in a meaningful way by helping the less privileged. The health screening will be beneficial in promoting healthy living amongst the elderly. At the same time, we hope that having the screening in a mall environment, together with the other activities such as the breakfast gathering, lively Banhu music and band playing their favourite melodies, will make them feel more relaxed.”
Community Involvement Project
The MERCATUS SMILE Project also will also involve tenants in the mall, namely, NTUC Foodfare, NTUC Unity pharmacy, Jean Yip Group, Wan Yang Health Product & Foot Reflexology Centre, and Hock Hua Tonic, to enable them to participate in giving back to the community in a meaningful way. In addition, Mr Tony Loh, an elderly busker, who earns a living by playing the Banhu and who sometimes performs at the linkway to AMK Hub, will also be performing at the event.
The project is also one way for Mercatus’ staff to give back to the community. 30 volunteered to be involved in this meaningful event to spread love to the needy elderly, to host the elderly and serve them breakfast.
